John thrives in Ritchie Bros.' Sales Department. You can too!
Want to learn how to land multi-million dollar deals in the equipment industry? We sat down with John Beasley, Regional Sales Manager in Minneapolis, to get a behind-the-scenes look at what it's like working in Sales for Ritchie Bros.
In a few words, describe your career path.
I have been with Ritchie Bros. for 18 years. I started in Chicago and experienced various roles, from Yard Staff to Territory Sales Manager, until I was promoted to Regional Sales Manager. Being able to experience different opportunities within the company was instrumental in my career development and job satisfaction.
What were some challenges you encountered along the way?
Sales can be a difficult field to succeed in. It's highly competitive, and learning how to deal with rejection is important. When you hear "no" after "no", it can start to get to you. But it never sabotaged my confidence; I knew the relationship you build with your customer is the key. I can confidently say that mindset turned out to be the greatest opportunity to improve my chance of closing the deal.
"Our success arises from the passion for our business and the trust we build with our customers. It's important to be genuine and seek to understand by consistently engaging new prospects and nurturing my current contacts."
What would you recommend to someone with limited experience in sales, especially in the equipment industry?
Ritchie Bros. is a place where you can develop yourself and close any gaps that you've identified in your skill set. I don't think any other company could have given me the maturity I've gained here. The environment forces you to think about yourself both as an individual and as part of a team. Looking back before I joined Ritchie Bros., I realized along the way that I didn't truly appreciate what it means to be in sales.
When you join a structured program like our Sales Graduate Program, it helps you understand all the touchpoints of our business, giving you a full 360 degree view of what a Territory Sales Manager does. Working across disciplines like Operations and Sales for 12 months provides you with an unparalleled opportunity to learn both sides of our business with equal respect.
Based on your experience, what would an ideal Sales Graduate candidate look like?
Someone who has an education is important, such as a Degree in Business, as it shows someone's commitment to continuous learning and development. She or he must be passionate about making a positive impact on the industry and demonstrate exceptional work ethic. Sales Graduates that excel are self-starters and enjoy interacting with people. We're a global company, so the flexibility to be mobile is a must and willingness to travel regionally. Anyone with exposure to our industry with basic knowledge in equipment or agriculture would be an asset. A Sales Graduate at Ritchie Bros. isn't just a job; it's a training program that will develop, motivate and lead you to an exciting career in Sales.
