About the Area
Campbell River, a beautiful waterfront city nestled on the east coast of central Vancouver Island and adjacent to Quadra Island, has long been known as the salmon fishing capital of the world. It also serves as a gateway community to Discovery Passage, the Discovery Islands and Strathcona Provincial Park.
Campbell River started as a commercial and sport salmon fishing settlement in the 1880s. Its reputation for fantastic salmon sport fishing has flourished since, even attracting many Hollywood stars who come to test their angling skills. The city is proud if its salmon fishing roots and hosts an annual Salmon Festival ever summer to celebrate. Mining, logging, fish canning and whale watching have also contributed to the area’s historical development and growth.
Today, Campbell River is also a hub for adventure and eco-tourism with many outdoor recreational activities to try: hiking, caving, golfing, skiing, kayaking, geocaching, boating, camping and coldwater scuba diving.
